Intro:
Much of the IC rules about the Sangheili are explained in the Sangheili Diplomatic Protocol thread. This thread codifies all the OOC policies and rules of roleplaying the sangheili. But before I begin to address some of these points, let me begin this by saying that the sangheili are commonly viewed as a special forces faction, but they can be interpreted as quite a different faction all together. We are a more "privileged” faction. I reinforce these points by stating that this faction is quite out of the ordinary: We get special weapons, we get a culture and lore that no other marine can use, and finally, we are not even roleplaying as humans on a server that focuses on Marine roleplay. The applications to make a sangheili must have the applicant demonstrate that the person has done appropriate research in order to roleplay sangheili correctly. They also had to show that they were really taking it to heart to make a sangheili character for the right reasons, not for the combat bonuses and server reputation.
Because of this, some standards must be addressed to show we are a professional faction. Lets face it, some people look up to our characters both IC’ly and OOC’y, we are used in events to add a special flavor to certain encounters that the server witnesses (Example: Sword Dueling). We must honor their respect and acceptance of allowing us to roleplay as a sangheili. We are thankful for the opportunity to roleplay as a sangheili, and we do not take our position for granted.
Activity:
Unlike other factions, we do not do activity checks. Instead, other sangheili and the server community monitors how active you are on with your sangheili. We would also like to see your sangheili being played for the majority of the time you are on the server for both passive and combat roleplay. I understand people have to balance play time with other characters, but realize with the limited amount of spots that are available in the faction in the first place, how you can easily do passive roleplay and combat roleplay with sangheili, and how there may be other people wanting your spot in the faction, would it not be fair to say that you should show your dedication of roleplaying as a sangheili by being on that character and roleplaying with other players?
Staff members are expected to passively roleplay with their sangheili and not use them purely for combat. Understand how popular this faction is for other players to join, and how there are limited spots in the faction. We understand that administrative duties must come first, but we want dedicated people to be in the swords. Don't clog up a limited spot and expect immunity from removal in the faction just because you are an admin.
To summarize: No activity checks, actively roleplay your sangheili, be honored that you have the opportunity to roleplay as them, and don’t take it for granted by only using them as combat characters; it will not be looked kindly in the long run.
In Real Life Complications and Character Storage:
We all have real life things to attend to. We understand that real life things must come first before anything. If such scenario pops up, make sure you notify me about it. Include how long you think it will last, as well as stating the reasons why. If the scenario is rather long, we may consider a character storage. Your character will be removed from the roster, but they will retain their rank and backstory. They may have the opportunity to come back as well. Mind you, this is a last resort option that will not be handed out freely. You must have demonstrated in the past that you have been very active with your sangheili. Remember, it is your responsibility to ensure your sangheili stays in existence.
Deployment:
Unlike other special forces factions, we do not require you to be in a squad of sangheili before you can deploy. You can join an event and be the only sangheili present, but you will tag along with a regular marine group rather than be your own squad. If sangheili players do wish to form their own squad, be sure there are three or more players available to do so. Keep in mind that even if you are in a sangheili squad, this does not mean you can go off on your own and dork around; you're asking for resentment and death. Make sure that whatever you are doing in the field is common sense and any radical ideas check out with the event admins. Specializations, Majors, Ultras, the Field Master, the General, and the Field Marshal are the only ones to make sangheili squads and lead them on the field on their own.
If you are asked to accompany another special forces faction, abide by their style of roleplay, and do not interfere with it (For Example: ODST’s breaching a room, let them do their style of rp and stay out of the way). You are a guest into their roleplay style, and you should only act as a support factor. The specializations (Assault, Ranger, Ascetic, Spec Ops) can potentially lead Minors, but ultimately their word is lower than an Ultra’s and Major’s. Remember the chain of command within the sangheili hierarchy, the words from the highest rank in the squad is the law (Of course if you chose to not follow an order, it can be treated as an IC thing). Like it is stated in the Sangheili Diplomatic Protocol, you listen to your Sangheili officers before the humans order.
Weapons:
Because the sangheili get different weapons than the marines, you will not use any of the human weapons at all. All sangheili start out with the plasma rifle. Once they reach Major rank, they get energy sword and carbine. The General is given the needler rifle. Plasma grenades are a weapon available to us, but it is not a flag. It will be given only by an admin when they see that the situation is fit. The Fuel Rod Cannon and Concussion Rifle is also available to us as well, but you are asking for trouble by using it excessively. These weapons have an incredible amount of splash damage and are great at decimating large groups of NPCS as well as vehicles. Use these weapons sparingly, and roleplay only carrying about three to five magazines of ammo in order to balance out the power of these weapons. The beam rifle is available through donation only, and it can be used by all sangheili ranks.
Combat Behavior:
Despite having the impression of looking like a tank, looking godlike in combat, and having the health and weapons to reinforce it, you are not these images. The community has greatly resented the action of being an indomitable force and acting "rambo like" in certain combat scenarios, or attempting to grab the spotlight in scenarios when the event does not call for it. It looks very bad on us if the sangheili were to do this, as well as disrupt the combat roleplay altogether. Therefore, we will be very strict on this matter entirely. The first time these situations happen, you will be given a very stern warning. The second time it happens, your character will be killed, no exceptions. I would advise you following this rule: if a normal human would die if they did some reckless combat, so will you.
Moving onto weapon behavior: there are weapon specific topics that you will follow in combat. The carbine reign and needler rifle features a wonderful zoom and range capability that can stretch as far as the map boundaries. However, it would look very unrealistic if all the sangheili were to shoot carbines and snipe very well in a range that is meant for snipers and beam rifles only. You will not use those weapons like a sniper; you will use it as a medium ranged weapon. The other weapon for discussion is the energy sword. We understand the adrenalined feeling that both you must get from using the sword, but do not charge into a group of NPCS or people and slaughter them all. It may be funny at first, but in the long run, it ruins our professional image, and many people have resented this action in the past. Be limited with the use of the sword, it is used for non-real time combat scenarios and some real time combat scenarios. Do not charge in with your sword at a group NPCs and expect to live through it if witnessed by the community.
The explosive weapons are to be used in a limited sense. Grenades are limited on how many you can use, while the Fuel Rod and Concussion rifle should be used only on vehicles, or used very very limitedly on a group of hostile soldiers. Be smart with the explosives; try not hurt anyone in the blast.
Shields:
The Sangheili get their health set at certain levels based off of rank. The idea is to roleplay the fact that sangheili have shields, and OOCly we wouldn't want to see an Ultra sangheili drop dead to a few MA5D rounds. The base health of a Sangheili without shields is at 100 hp. For information about shield values, refer to the Sangheili Weapons Policy and Shield Values thread.
(If you have donated for the health stimulus, you have to send me a screenshot of your health bonus before you will be given bonus health.)
When you are low on “shields”, it is recommended to roleplay that your shields are low or beeping, or that they are broken. Wait until there is a “quiet” time in battle before asking for a shield recharge from one of the admins. Asking constantly for a shield recharge is not recommended; we will think you are doing something combatwise that is wrong.
Injuries and Death:
You cannot deny the fact that if a sangheili dies in combat, people will know about it. We are not immortal despite all of our special privileges and abilities. If it is seen by me that you died in combat, your Sangheili would have to injureRP or be PK'd. Mind you that there are exceptions to this policy.
Death due to lag or crashes are never counted.
Death due to friendly fire is scenario dependent.
Death due to NPC's suddenly being spawned right in front of you by an admin are not counted (Especially if they have shotguns).
Death due to prop kill does not count.
Death due to an NPC shooting a shotgun at an unrealistic range is not counted (We understand they are quite damaging at any range).
Death due to an explosion whether it be by a gbomb or rocket is not counted (Scenario dependent).
If you have to go afk in the field, log off and come back when your situation is settled. Injuries will be handed out in a lore friendly sense; please refer to the Sangheili Injury Policy thread for more details. Pk's will be handed out if your Sangheili does something stupid out on the field. If the situation is fair and makes sense, your character can be PK'd.
Mingery:
Everyone minges at some point. You are asked to keep mingery scenarios restricted to the sangheili quarters or places where the common player cannot see it happen (Example: Top of the ship, in a non common room). We also are not going to bring a minging scenario into another players roleplaying session. We understand that you or perhaps other people want to indulge back to the nostalgic jokes of Halo 3 & Reach of, “Its the Dinosaur!” or “Wort Wort Wort!". You may indulge, but only in the specified, secluded environments away from the general population where there are no people trying to roleplay. Mingery is quite contagious, and we do not want the sangheili to start minging sessions at all. If people try to minge during your roleplaying time, do your best to brush it off. If you see other sangheili players minging in a non-specified environment, do not join them. If someone tries to do an IC conversation with you and someone else interrupts you with an off-topic LOOC conversation, don’t brush off the IC conversation. We want keep the image of sangheili being mature people and respectful roleplayers, not celebrities to be worshiped. We are professional, so act like it whenever you are with other players.
Fraternization:
It would be fair to say that the sangheilixhuman love relationships is quite odd. While such relationships have occurred ICly in the past, they will no longer occurr, at least not without hefty IC punishments. While the idea is technically there to happen, you can expect that some particularly high ranked character within the faction will not 'approve' of such actions. If your character engages in such relationships, then you should expect some sort of IC punishment (the exception to this is that someone's character could be transferred out of the detachment, causing them to be removed from the faction which some may view as an OOC punishment as well).
Ranks:
Promotions will not be a regular thing, nor will be held at a normal marine debrief. We may or may not have an IC ceremony with the other sangheili in the sangheili quarters. I will not give too many details into how you rank up, but I will hint that you should be on your sangheili rather religiously for starters. Once you reach Major rank, you have the opportunity to command Minors and the specialization classes. Ultra rank will be able to command Majors, Minors, and the specialization classes. ALL promotions in the faction will be done with myself, or at the very least, with my approval first.
The Question of Interpretation:
We understand that there is plenty of sources of sangheili culture and lore that are out there. Many people have read the texts of web pages and books, and interpreted or speculated the information in many different ways. There is information that may not be known to the large majority of people as well. Some of the information, interpretations, or speculations could be taken the wrong way and be met with extreme backlash from the community. In an attempt to appease everyone, we will use information that is common to everyone on here. If there is an idea of the sangheili that is quite out of the ordinary or special, use your best judgment on whether or not it would be wise to implement it, and how others will react to it. By no means we do not want to limit the roleplay you can do, but we want to limit any essay debates from happening over ones mere speculation. If any sort of arguments do occur over interpretation and the lore, please bring them to me to help sort them out.
Sangheili Behavior Overall:
Through development of roleplay, certain behaviors and attitudes change within the sangheili you play as. It would be quite boring if all the sangheili were to be a "cookie cutter" sangheili forever. It is important however, not to forget what the sangheili culture and beliefs are, and to always uphold them when roleplaying your sangheili. Remember everything you learned about the sangheili culture when you made your application and do not get out of character by changing, interpreting, or omitting certain things that sangheili should always revere. Sangheili are viewed to live by their culture; it would look extremely out of character and bad on us as a faction if parts of the culture were interpreted very differently or omitted, and would greatly be frowned upon by the community.
It is also emphasized that just because you have a sangheili character, you are not to powergame. You do have great strength, but powergaming is unacceptable. Powergaming is where you do an action to a person and they have no chance to react to it (Imagine if Kel 'Zamam were to do a /me "cuts off the sangheilis mandibles" out of nowhere). You must give the other party a chance to react to whatever you are doing.
Nicknames:
In the theme of professionalism, toning down mingery, and somewhat a lorewise accuracy, no nicknames. Nicknames are something ICly someone would accept; so then why would a Sangheili have their family honored name be tarnished by a human word? You can compare this idea with why Sangheili want to be called Sangheili rather than elites, split-jaws, or squids. So no nicknames.
Conclusion:
It is important to remember that this faction is very privileged and quite out of the ordinary. We are privileged to have the opportunity to roleplay as a sangheili with all its immersive tools we get. We are also out of the ordinary considering we are not even roleplaying as humans on a server that is primarily focused on a Halo Marine Roleplay. No matter what happens, the server is always focused on that marine military aspect of roleplay, and we will not boast or advertise to the other factions that we are more privileged or better than others. We must also realize that there are limited spots in the faction, and we do not want to keep the sangheili who would take their position for granted while there are others who would join the faction for the right reasons.
Therefore, we must be very mature in the position we receive. We want to reinforce that the sangheili players are going to be professional and mature in their new unique positions. We want applicants to be grateful for the community's allowance on having the faction, and to be honored that the faction leaders saw you worthy to be accepted into a unique position. Be thankful, be honored, know you're privileged, be professional, be mature, and overall be a good representation of not only the sangheili, but your real life self.
By having your sangheili application accepted, you agree to all the statements above.
